Alongside research on gender equality, we have organised events to promote gender mainstreaming at the University of Tokyo.
IWD2021 at UTokyo
Last updated: 8 March 2021
Happy International Women’s Day, to the Women of UTokyo!
International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global event which has been celebrated by the United Nations since 1977. This year, the United Nations’ theme for International Women’s Day is “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”. As a leader in Japanese academia, the University of Tokyo has a special role to play in shaping this future. Which is why, on this March 8, we organised a new event at UTokyo for International Women’s Day.
How is IWD2021 celebrated at UTokyo?
This short film was made in recognition of the Women of UTokyo, to celebrate IWD together at UTokyo during the COVID-19 pandemic. The verb “to recognise” means to acknowledge formally, to take notice of, and to perceive clearly.
We hope this film will remind the UTokyo community that a growing pillar of its members are women, and of their contribution to the University of Tokyo.
In addition, we would be so happy if this film can give courage to younger female students who are feeling lonely because they see few women at UTokyo, by showing their diverse supporters.
Thank you to our 113 participants, who entrusted us with their photos.
This event was also made possible thanks to three other registered student groups at UTokyo. Thank you to our partner, WomEnpowered International (WE Int.), and to our supporters, Tokkoto Gender Movement and WonderWomen.
We also acknowledge the support of UTokyo’s Global Leader Program for Social Design and Management (GSDM).
